Niles and Piggy
This is Niles:
He is, quite possibly, the coolest, cutest cat on the planet. Seriously. Ask anyone who has met him. My sister, herself the proud owner of two very cute kitties, agrees. GTB is astounded at least daily by Niles’ sheer adorability. My mom, who doesn’t really like cats (more of a dog person, really) gawks at his widdle face and his chubby paws and his round, soft belly. Friends, neighbors, people who don’t like cats. They all love Niles.
He’s a total whore. As soon as someone new walks in the room, he rolls over on his back, cleans his cheeks with his fat little paws, and purrs like a lawn mower as if to say, “PLEASE! Please rub my belly before the agony of not being rubbed by you makes me implode with wanting and cuteness!”
It’s seriously that bad.
This is the dog I want:
GTB and I have been half-jokingly talking about adding another member to our already blissed out family for a while now. We’ve decided when we do adopt this little bundle of joy, we’re going to call it Piggy. Male or female, Piggy it will be.
We laugh at the thought of Niles and Piggy running around the house together. When Niles gets unruly (which is rare, but when it does happen, it’s usually at about 4:30 a.m.), we agree it might be time to find him a little Piggy friend. We daydream about what it would be like to take Piggy on walks through the neighborhood, past Stumptown and the other puppies.
But, at some point, reason takes hold and we remember that our landlord won’t allow a dog. And that we can’t really afford one right now anyway. And that we aren’t sure that Piggy and Niles would get along, and since Niles doesn’t have claws on his fat front paws, he’d have no way of defending himself if Piggy got a little evil one day. We sigh and put our dreams of a Piggy-filled life on hold, for a while at least.
Then today, GTB sent me this.
“Look!” he said. “A piggy and a big orange cat living peacefully together.”
Um, kinda.
I guess if you can teach a tiger to suckle, and be suckled by, a pig, anything is possible.

[…] I walked home from the gym, intent on apologizing for saying something so meanspirited and figuring out a way to make up. About two blocks from our house, I crossed paths with a perfect little Piggy puppy and remembered why I am really marrying GTB. […]

[…] GTB and I just got back from visiting my brother and his family (more about the trip in a later post) and all I can say about the above picture is this: if Niles was in it, I’d probably have to have it framed and hung above my mantle. If I had a mantle. […]
