Mrs. GTB
Y’all, I’m engaged.
Yep, GTB popped the big question, and we are now enfianced. I knew it was coming. His oh-so-subtle attempts to gauge my ring size and find out if I preferred round or square gemstones left little doubt. However, I didn’t expect it today. And I didn’t expect to be wearing sweaty gym clothes when I suddenly turned into someone’s betrothed.
GTB had told me a few days ago that he would be meeting the band to record on Sunday. I was only mildly bothered by this, given that he’d practiced with them Friday night, devoted most of Saturday to their gig in downtown Portland, which competed with the Rose Festival Starlight Parade, and now he was going to be in the studio all day Sunday. So off he went, saying goodbye and telling me he’d call when he had an idea of when he’d be home. I had much laundry to do, so I was looking forward to a day of that, in addition to a nice long workout.
So much for spending a weekend together.
A little more than an hour later, on my way back from an extra sweaty (what is with the humidity?!), nauseating, not even a little bit enjoyable visit to the gym, I came around the corner to our street and noticed GTB sitting on our porch swing. As I walked up the porch stairs, I asked him what happened to recording with the band. He said that he decided he’d rather spend the day with me. I told him I thought that was sweet, and gave him a little kiss, working extra hard not to touch him with any part of my disgustingly sweaty body.
He talked some more about how he was excited to spend the day with me, because he’s always excited to be with me. How he looks forward to it everytime. How he likes spending time with me more than anything else. How he wants to spend every day for the rest of our lives together. I said, “OK.” And that’s when he got down on one knee.
There I was, sweaty, clammy, starting to have post-workout chills, still holding my iPod and water bottle. And there’s my boyfriend on one knee on our front porch. I said, “Oh God! You’re really gonna do this now?” We both got teary and he said, “[My Full Name], will you marry me?”
I, of course, said, “Yes, of course!” and hugged him as hard as I could, forgetting completely about the B.O. I was inundating him with. When we pulled apart, he reached into his shirt pocket and presented to me the most perfect princess cut diamond on a white gold band.
We came inside and made all the appropriate phone calls. My mom, my sister, his mom, his dad, my step-dad, BFE and Joe, Mr. and Mrs. Slamm, his aunt, his sister. Not necessarily in that order. He also broke out the bottle of champagne he’d bought and gave me a bouquet of peonies and gerber daisies. I took the above picture with my cell phone and emailed it to my mom, my sister, and his mom. I told the story of how he did it more times than I can currently recollect. We sat on the couch and smiled and cried some more, both staring at the ring and saying, “Oh my God! MARRIED!”
And then, I took a shower.
And then, we drove to the bookstore to stock up on planning books and my very first copy of Modern Bride. Yep, I’ve become THAT girl.
We’re thinking of next June.

Dum, dum da dum (that’s the wedding song, in case you couldn’t tell). Very exciting! Congratulations! Please send me an invite; it will give me an excuse to fly west next summer.
By the way, will it be Ms. (your last name) or Mrs. (your last name) or Mrs. (GTB’s last name)?Just wondering. I miss my last name….
Love, love, love and kisses, bride. Pass them on to the groom, too.
Tell him nice ring (L-O-V-E-L-Y).

Well, now that would be very cool… Maybe create a new name; blend the two together – be the Portland’s version of Bennifer or Bradelinga. But, with last names. Whadda think?

Partially just kidding.
