Too bad it’s only supposed to be 60 degress today

I love May 8. For one thing, I like the 8th of every month because 8 is my lucky number. And May is a really good month because it’s usually when we start getting our first real glimpses of Summer. Days in March or April when it gets above 70 degrees are just teases. You know that you have weeks and weeks of rain and grey to contend with before it’s time to break out the warm weather clothes and the BBQ. But when the temperature starts to climb up in May, you know the real deal is just around the corner.

But that’s not why I really love May 8. No, the reason I have a fondness for this particular day is because of an old saying my mom used to sing-songishly recall on this day every year. She told us it was a Wazzu thing. It went like this:

“Hooray, hooray! It’s the eighth of May. Outdoor intercourse starts today.”

Of course, it’s warmer in Pullman than it is in Portland this time of year. But I’m still looking forward to making good use of my new backyard in the coming weeks.

Mom would be so proud.
