Pandemics and pregnancies

If I learned nothing else from Bowling for Columbine, I got this: the media is intent on freaking us out. Fear, according to Mr. Moore, is one of the most effective ways to control the masses. Well, if they are trying to scare me with all this talk of avian flu and the coming pandemic, they’re succeeding.

I’m not a hypochondriac. I was raised by a pharmacist, so I am perfectly comfortable with colds, flus, ear infections, anxiety disorders, etc. I know better than most how to medicate for any of those problems. I have a medicine cabinet that rivals most Rite Aids. I get sick about once a year, and then suffer allergies for a few weeks each spring. No problem. I’m prepared. But this avian flu thing? Fuckin’ A, Bubba.

Now the Media is saying that bird flu is what killed millions of people around the world back in the 1918-19 pandemic. Great.

And just in case I wasn’t convinced that the apocalypse is indeed upon us, I learned this morning that Katie Holmes is pregnant. Presumably, or not, with Tom Cruise’s offspring.

I’d run for the hills, but there are even more birds up there.
